Founded in 1971 the Festival Irish Dance Teachers Association was formed to unite
Festival Teachers who for many years had been competing mainly at Music/dancing Festival
over Northern Ireland. The aim of the Association was to unite these teachers and
share their common interest in the traditional styles of dance.
With 47 registered
teachers the purpose of the F.D.T.A is to foster and regulate Irish Dancing by maintaining
their heritage of standard team dances coupled with the ability to portray creative
choreography in both the Solo and Original Team Dances.
The F.D.T.A organise their
own festivals throughout Northern Ireland as well as participating in open competitions
and competing with other dance organisations in Ireland Great Britian and and the
rest of Europe.
However, the most prestigious event in the F.D.T.A calendar is the Ulster Dance Championships held in a different venue each year featuring solo qualified dancers from every county. These championships give the Teachers an opportunity to display the best of their Standard Teams and to express their degree of creativeness in the Original Team Dances all held in a competitive but friendly yearly event.
